An IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is a bank identifier used to uniquely identify accounts at a European financial institution, to facilitate the automated processing of cross-border transactions. Although the IBAN is an international standard, some elements of the IBAN are defined at the national level.
The electric format of an IBAN has up to 34 contiguous alphanumeric characters containing the following consecutive components:
Country Code: 2 letter country code as specified in ISO 3166, of the country in which the bank/branch servicing the IBAN resides
Check Digits: 2 digits (calculation differs by country and sometimes by bank within a country)
Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN): up to 30 alphanumeric characters, 0-9, A-Z (only uppercase), no separators (has a fixed length per country)
If you do not know the IBAN of an account, contact the owner of that account. If you attempt to generate an IBAN on your own, the resulting number may be unusable.
